Making Time for God

Begin your lesson with a bag full of stuff that the kids will enjoy.  In the past I have used:

  • A board game
  • baseball glove
  • football
  • DVD
  • Frisbee
  • book
  • computer game or two
  • fishing pole
  • Bible (this item is required)

Items aren't really important, but you must have a handful of stuff for this to work.

Ask for a volunteer from your audience.  Hand your volunteer an item and tell them that they must hold onto each item that you hand them.  They can't sit them down to grasp the next item, they must balance them all. (It helps if you put something fairly broad and easy to handle on the bottom and then pile the other stuff on top)  As you hand the volunteer each item, ask the audience if there is anything wrong or sinful with each item. For example, is there anything wrong with baseball?  Is there anything wrong with playing football?  After your volunteer has an armload of stuff hand him a closed bible and ask him/her to read you a portion of scripture from the bible. Remember, they can't sit the stuff down; there is no way they can open up the bible and read from it.

Explain to the kids the whole point is that sometimes we let things in life that aren't wrong in and of themselves  interfere with our time spent with God.  When we allow things to come between us and God even though in and of themselves they are not wrong, they become a sin.  Remind the boys and girls that we have to put God first and balance all the other things in life
against that.
