Dancing Handkerchief
This is another illusion that with a little preparation, and practice is very mystifying, and you can use in a multiple of ways. I like it for visitation, and I call it my pet handkerchief.
What you see: You pull a handkerchief from your pocket and show that it is just a regular handkerchief. You now pull a lump, or wad of it up in your hand and begin to tell it to do things and it obeys you. If you tell the handkerchief to lean to the right, it does. If you tell it to dance back and forth it does. Tell it to move with the music, it does, or tell it to take a bow and it does. Perhaps you want to pretend to borrow a hair from a young lady, and then pretend to wrap it or tie it to the handkerchief. Now you can pull and the handkerchief moves wherever you pull it. It is amazing. Then when you are finished, just fold it up, and place it back in your pocket.
How it works: This one takes a little preparation once, and then you are set. You will need a regular handkerchief and a small piece of coat hanger wire about 3 - 4 inches long. Take the handkerchief, and fold the wire into one edge of the handkerchief. Now sew the wire in place giving the handkerchief a new hem on that side. Now you are ready. You can fold the handkerchief and place it in your pocket. Remove it at any time and pull it up through your hand, making sure to place the wire into your hand as you do. Now using the thumb of the hand that is holding the handkerchief, all you have to do is apply a little pressure and the handkerchief will move. Push forward and it will move forward, pull back and it will move back. With a little practice you will get the hang of this and then it is up to you. What story do you want to tell, or how do you want to present this to your viewers. It takes a little to set it up the first time, but from then on, this is a lot of fun, and you will enjoy it for a long time. Have fun!

Knotted Ropes
A great effect to get people’s attention. Has many uses, you will be limited only by your imagination.
What you see: The teacher holds a rope in the left hand that is a little over 2 ft. long, and in the right hand a rope that is only about 1 ft. long. Both ropes have knots tied in the ends. You ask the audience which hand has the longest rope. Naturally they will say the left hand. You tell them that might seem crazy to ask, however, you have noticed that these ropes sometimes change. You then reach over with your right hand a pull the rope from the right hand back through the left hand. Suddenly both ropes are the same length. You now place both ropes in the left hand, and ask, what more could possibly happen to these ropes? At that point you reach down, and grab the ropes with both hands and quickly pull the ropes apart and the two ropes become one rope. You tell them that this would be a good time for them to applause, and a good time for you to put the rope away.
How it works: You actually have three ropes. Cut two ropes about 12 inches long and tie and knot in both ends. Now cut a third rope about 2 ft long and tie a not in both ends of that rope as well. make sure to allow enough room for the knots so as not to make the rope too short when you tie the knots in place. Since you will never remove these knots, you may want to place a little Elmer’s glue on the ends to keep them from fraying. You now start off with the long rope and one short rope in your left hand, the knots hidden inside your fist. And one short rope in your right hand, just held in the middle. No one will know that you are holding two ropes in your left hand. Ask which hand has the long rope. Play this up, and then tell them the reason you ask is that you have a hard time being able to tell at times. As you do this, take the rope in your right hand and begin to pull it through your left palm, as you do let your fingers slide down the long rope as well. When the knot from the rope in your right hand reaches your palm, drop that rope and pick up the long rope with your right hand. If you have done this correctly, your right hand will be in the middle of the long rope and the two short ropes will now be in your left hand, and they will look the same length. As soon as this effect sets in, place the rope in your right hand and hold them together there, still hiding the knots from the other ropes.
It still appears that you have just two ropes. Now ask what you could possibly do from here, and then reach down, grab the ropes and pull apart quickly. The knots will stop you from slipping off the end of the rope, and now with the ropes stretched out between your two hands, it will appear as if you are just holding one long rope. Tell them it is time for them to applaud, and time for you to put the rope away. Practice, there are a lot of possibilities with this one. Have fun!

Tax Cut
A great effect to use to teach giving or missions.
What you see: You come into the class with two one dollar bills. You show these to the boys and girls. Then you tell them that a dollar is not what is used to be. If you want, you can tell them the things that you used to buy with a dollar. However, times have changed, and so has the dollar. At this point, place the two dollar bills back to back, and take a pair of scissors and cut them in half. Then you can tell the boys and girls that if we give our dollars to Jesus, He can take and do with them what we can not. Although they are not worth much to us, they are worth a lot to Him. Then with a little shuffle you show the boys and girls that the bills are still connected and still whole. Even though they just saw you cut them in half.
How it works: It takes a little preparation before hand. You won’t believe what I am writing here, so I will tell you to try it before you think I am crazy. It will work, and it is amazing. To prepare the dollars, first get two fairly new, crisp dollar bills. Secondly, you will need a bottle of rubber cement. You can purchase this at any Wal-Mart or office supply store. On the back of both dollars place about a one inch swipe of rubber cement right in the middle of the dollar. It needs to be a good covering, not gloppy, but good and thick. Allow this to dry for about 30 seconds to a minute, and then take a little baby powder and spread it over the space where you placed the rubber cement on both bills. Lightly rub it in with your index finger and then bush or blow away any excess. You are now ready. You can hand the bills out for inspection and no one will be able to tell that they are rigged. When you go to cut the bills, place them back to back, and square them up evenly. Hold them in your hand so that you will be able to cut them straight across the middle. Cut them holding on to both sides as you do, do not allow them to fall. Place the scissors aside and then simply grab one end of each bill and allow the other end to fall. Amazingly, the bills will stick together and will look just like one bill again. Naturally, you can not hand these out for inspection, but after waving them around a little, you can place them in your pocket and finish your story. You will need to tape them together later, they really are cut, but they will hold for the remainder of you lesson. Have Fun!

All Tied Up
This is a very easy illusion to do, but one that looks very effective. You can use this to illustrate the bondage of sin, and yet the forgiving power of God.

What you see: You wrap a rope around your left wrist. Then lay your right wrist over top of the left and allow someone to tie the rope as tight as they want on top of your right wrist. They can pull as tight as they want, and tie as many knots as they want. After they are satisfied, you can talk about the bondage of sin and what it will do to your life. Then at any moment, you can turn around, or place your hands under a scarf and when you face the class or remove your hands from under the scarf, your hands are completely free. You see, God’s love sets us free immediately.
How it works: Simple, when you go to place the rope on your left hand, hold both ends of the rope in your right hand and lay the top of your left wrist (where your watch face would be) in the loop of the rope. Now let the ends fall on either side of your left wrist. In other words, the rope is just wrapped around your left hand. (See picture) Now all you have to do is lay your right wrist on top of your left wrist and let someone tie them together. It makes no difference how tight they tie. As you will see, the way the rope is draped over your left wrist, forms an “X” between the two wrists when tied. Now all that is necessary to escape is that you twist your wrists and slide them apart. I like to just turn around, and hand the rope to the person who tied it. The knots are all still there, and my removing my hands has been hidden in the movement of me turning. It is instant, and very impressive. With a little practice, you will enjoy this one too, and it can be done anywhere and with anything that is capable of tying your wrists together. Have fun!

Cups & Balls
This is one of the oldest and easiest effects in “magic.” With a little practice this will become something that you can do on the spur of the moment and people will be amazed every time. A great way to illustrate how nothing can keep us from the love of God.
What you see: You have three paper cups stacked inside of each other and three small pieces of paper rolled into a ball (torn pieces of napkin work great) lying in front of the cups. You begin by picking up the cups and one by one sitting them face down on the table. Now place a ball in front of each cup. Pick up the ball in front of the middle cup and place it on top of the cup. Now place the cup on the left on top of the ball and middle cup, and then place the cup from the right on top of the stack, tap the top of the cups, and pick up the cups and you will find that the ball has dropped through the cups and is now lying on the table. You can now repeat this amazing feat. Place the three cups back on the table, face down again, and this time place the middle cup over the ball that has already fallen through. Now pick up another one of the balls, place it on top of the middle cup, and then stack the other two on top just as before. Tap the top of the stack and remove the cups to show that now both balls are lying under the stack of cups. Repeat this a third time, just as the first two, placing the last remaining ball on top of the middle cup, and then stacking the other two on top, tap the top and now all three have penetrated the cups. It is absolutely amazing.
How it works: All that is necessary to make this work is a fourth ball, rolled up and placed inside of the middle cup. Stack the three cups on the table face up, lift the top cup and drop the fourth ball inside of the second cup, and then place the first cup back on top of the second cup, ball trapped inside. Now everything will just work. When you set the cups out, the ball will be under the middle cup. Centrifugal force will keep anyone from seeing it as you set the cups down. Now just place a ball on top of the middle cup, stack the others, and lift the cups, it will appear that the ball has penetrated, and you are set for the next one. The hidden ball will always be in the middle cup, and the rest is just you playing it up and making it look really special. With a little practice this is one that can become your favorite, it has mine. Have fun!

Got Milk?
A very stunning illusion, and can be used to prove that what you think you see is not always what you see. This one requires some assistance.
What you see: You show your class a glass of milk. Place it under a handkerchief. Remove the handkerchief several times so they can see the glass. Begin to move around the class and let kids reach up under the handkerchief and feel the glass of milk. After several have felt and are convinced that the glass of milk is there, stop, and ask the class a question. Have you got milk? Do you think I’ve got milk? After their answer, toss the handkerchief into the air, and watch their amazement as they realize there is no glass of milk under the handkerchief anymore.
How it works: You will need someone to help you on this one. A plant or a stooge so to speak. Everything is as it seems until the last person. They are your accomplice. You really have a glass of milk, and you really place it under the handkerchief. You really do let several kids feel the glass of milk. However the last person that reaches under the handkerchief, do not hold the handkerchief very high in the air for them, and as you take away the handkerchief allow them to keep the glass in their hand. You will need to do three things. Number one, hold the glass with your hand around the top of the rim so when the glass is removed, no one will be able to tell. Number 2, use a small glass. Do not use a 32 oz. glass or even a 16 oz. glass. A small juice glass works best; even a paper cup will work. Number three, you will need a helper who can keep their mouth closed and not divulge your secret. They need to be turned away from the rest of the class so that when they remove the cup, they can place it to their side and no one will see it. Also, allow the handkerchief to hang low in the front so as to hide what your accomplice is doing. With a little bit of practice, this is a very amazing trick. Make sure that you play it up after the last person feels the glass of milk. If you show that is gone immediately, people might catch on, however, a little acting and 30 seconds can make all the difference in the world. Have fun and enjoy this object lesson.

The Red "C" Illustration
Hold the two “C” together so the audience can only see one. Announce that you will now present, “A re-creation, by way of illustration, of a biblical event.” Pull the two “C’s” apart and display them side by side. Say, “Ladies and Gentlemen, you have just witnessed the PARTING of the Red Sea (“C”).
After the laughter, and especially the groans dies down, you can make the “C’s” cross over each other by moving your hands over one another. “Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you have now witnessed the crossing of the Red Sea (C).”
You can then say, “I hope all of you could “C” that OK. If you could just answer me by saying “Si” (“C”) (each time, as you say “C” hold out one of the “C’s” to emphasize your point).
Now you can also add one more. Hold one of the “C’s” high in the air and then let it fall to the ground watching it all the way has it falls. Now look at the audience and say. “Well, there you go, the Dead “C”.”
You can lay aside the “C” in your hand and come back to it later in your lesson. Act as if you stumbled across the lone “C” and say, “OOPS, I can’t believe it, I almost didn’t see (C) this, but I can see (C) it now. See (C) what I mean. Lift up the “C” each time to illustrate what you are saying.
Have Fun and ENJOY!

Rubberband Trick
What you see:
You place a rubberband on your hand and around your first and second fingers. You tell your friends that you can command this rubberband to jump from your first two fingers to your last two fingers. Have a friendly conversation with your fingers, and then tell the rubberband that you are going to count to 3, and then It should jump. Slowly count 1 - 2 - 3 - and miraculously the rubberband jumps. It will amaze and astound anyone!
Secret:
Using the rubberband above, open your left hand and place the rubberband around your first two fingers down to the bottom knuckle on your hand. Now set up the trick by telling everyone what you are going to do. “You will make this rubberband jump from the first two fingers to the last two fingers.
As you tell this fold your fingers down and place the rubberband over all four fingernails. You now have your fingers closed into a partial fist and the rubberband is completely around the first two fingers, and it goes over all four fingernails on your left hand. After talking to your friends, and then talking to your hand (this looks good, but is not necessary) simply open your hand. The “magic” illusion will happen on its own. The rubberband will jump from the first two fingers to the last to fingers.
You can also do the trick in reverse. Tell them this is an obedient rubberband, and it will even go back to where it belongs.
HAVE FUN WITH THIS TRICK AND USE IT TO INVITE MORE FRIENDS TO CHURCH!

Pen Thru Handkerchief
A seemingly impossible illusion that is, however, very easy to do.
What you see: It appears that you can take a pen or pencil and push it through the middle of a handkerchief or any piece of material without making a hole in the material. Seems impossible to do, and yet you do it very easily.
How to do: Hold up a handkerchief, scarf, piece or material, and ask the boys and girls to inspect it thoroughly for holes. Now, make a fist with your left hand and lay the handkerchief over your fist. Now ask a volunteer to take their index finger and make a pocket in the material, poking it down inside of your hand. Allow them to do this, and then ask another volunteer to do the same making sure that the first pocket is good. After the second volunteer does their handy work, here comes the fun. As you return to the front of the class take the index finger of your right hand, and poke it in the pocket as well. However, do not actually poke it in the pocket, but carefully separate thumb and fingers of left hand, and slide the index finger of your left hand into the pocket from the side, actually pushing the pocket aside and making a hole beside the hank. Done quick enough, no one will catch this and now all you have to do is insert a pencil or pen into the pocket, and hold it with left first until you wish for it to fall to the floor. Now release your grip and the pencil will fall, apparently passing through the hank. Now pick up a corner and slowly pull the hank off your hand and no one will be able to tell what happened. This is fool proof, and takes very little practice, but is very effective.

The Microsoft Trick
I call this the “Microsoft” illustration because you can get all of the pictures you need from the clipart in Microsoft Publisher. It is a good illustration and an entire lesson.
What you see: You invite seven (7) children to the front and give six of them a card to hold against their chest until you tell them to turn it around. You now ask the seventh child to pick a number between one and six and then tell you the number. Once you know the number, you count off and have that child step aside. Now you look at all of the other cards one at a time. Although they are good pictures, none of them will get you to heaven. Finally have the last child whose number was picked step forward and show their card. It is a picture or Jesus, or the name, Jesus. After all this is the only way to get to heaven. Jesus. Thank the children, elaborate and give an invitation. Jesus will do the rest.
How does it work: Simple. Go to Microsoft Publisher, or anywhere that you can get five pictures. Money, Water, Church, 10 Commandments, Praying Hands, and then either the name Jesus or a picture of Jesus.
The order of cards is not important except for the “Jesus” card. Holding the cards face down, it must be the 3rd card. Hand out the cards from left to right. Regardless of what number is picked, you will always pick the third card. Number one, count O-N-E and have the third child step forward. Say, since this is the card you picked, we will have them step aside and we will look at the others first. Two works the same way, T-W-O and have the third person step forward. For three, 1-2-3. Four, just count 1-2-3-4 from the opposite end (right to left). For five, simply spell the number, F-I-V-E from the opposite end (right to left) and for six, spell S-I-X (left to right) You will always pick the third card. The rest is up to you. How much you talk about each card, or what verses you use can vary. The outcome will always be the same. Jesus is the only way to heaven.
I use small poster board, print the pictures off the computer on 81/2 x 11 paper and glue them to the colorful poster board to make it look nice and last long. You can do however you like.

Magic Math
This makes a good crowd breaker, and gets everyone’s attention immediately.
What you see: A person is asked to choose a number between 1 and 10. They are then asked to add, subtract, add and subtract, and finally the host tells them the number they are thinking of, and he or she is right, for everyone in the audience. It’s amazing.
How it works: Ask your audience to choose a number between 1 and 10, but don’t tell it to anyone, keep it a secret. Now, add 5 to that number. Keep it in your mind, don’t let anyone see it. Now, subtract 2. Got it? Good, now add 4. Keep up. Don’t get lost. One more thing. Remember your original number? Subtract it from the number you have now. Got it? Are you with me? Good. Now give the answer. The answer is “7”. Regardless of the number they start with, the answer will always be “7”. Works every time, and if it doesn’t work it is because they goofed. Have fun. This one is a blast.

The Magic Coat Hanger
Although this looks impressive, it is actually a science fact and not an illusion. But who cares. It still looks great and there are many messages you can convey.
What you see: You bring a volunteer to stage and have then cut a coat hanger. Now blow up a balloon, tie the end, hand it to them and tell them to push the coat hanger through the balloon without popping it. Only once in 20 years has anyone been able to do this. So the outcome will probably be, POP! Now you take the coat hanger, and tell them that you are going to give it a try. Blow up another balloon, tie the end, and now you push the coat hanger through the balloon and it does not pop. Impossible? Not at all. Just really cool looking.
How it works: You will need a coat hanger, wire cutters, and several balloons. The coat hanger is real, wire cutters are real, and you can buy your balloons at Wal-mart. Here is how it works. How long you draw it out is up to you, what message you teach is up to you, there are many. All you need to know is when you go to push the coat hanger through the balloon, there are two places that a balloon is strongest. At the top where you tie the end, and on the bottom where the balloon first started being formed. When a balloon is blown up, you can see the bead at the bottom. It will be real dark and look like a circle. The balloon is thickest here and can be penetrated without ripping. Now simply avoid hitting the side of the balloon with the coat hanger as you push it through, it will pop if you touch the sides. Push until the coat hanger reaches the other end next to where you have tied it. Slowly push the coat hanger through the balloon again right next to the knot. The only thing to remember is not to blow the balloon too big. The tighter the balloon the smaller the bead will be on the balloon the easier it will be to pop.

Saving the Lost
This is a very effective illusion illustrating how we can win the lost. It can be done on a small scale or a large. How big do you want it to be, it is up to you.
What you see: In front of the class are two glass containers. Both are half full of water. One has the word Lost written on it, and the other says saved. Into the one that says lost you begin to drop food coloring, green for envy and lust, yellow for jealousy, red for anger and hatred, blue for bad emotions. Now mix all of the colors together and the “lost” one will become black. You can do this a couple of times, and each time it just gets darker. Now start with the one that says saved. Each time you drop food coloring into it, it just disappears. No matter what you place in it, it vanishes. Proving that sin does not have to rule a saved person. Now, take the “saved” glass, and pour part of it into the “lost” glass and now it too becomes clear. Showing that the “Saved” can help the “Lost” if we will only share our life with them.
How it works: This one is really simple. All you need are two glass containers, food coloring, and bleach. Fill the “Lost” container half way with water and one drop of yellow food coloring. (Bleach has a slight yellow tint) Now fill the “Saved” container half way with bleach. The rest is easy. No matter how much food coloring you place in the water it will only get darker and blacker as you mix the colors. No matter what you place in the bleach it will disappear as the bleach eats the color. No when you pour the bleach into the water it will eat the color in there with a little stirring and you have a wonderful illusion with a dramatic point.

One of each of the pairs will be blind folded, and then given 60 seconds to see how many clothes pins he or she can place on the other child. Girls will go first, and then the boys. We are trying to see who can place the most clothes pins on their partner and earn points for their teams.

Name That Fast Food
Name That Fast Food! Bring a volunteer on stage & see if they are hungry. Unveil a plate of fast food (bought on your way to church) that you have taken out of the wrappers. Build up the idea that the volunteer will not be able to guess where the food came from. Right before you let them eat it, bring out the blender, and toss the food into it & VROOOOOOM...instant Fast Food Shake! Now see if the volunteer will still want to Name That Fast Food? Would you like ketchup with your fries? Naturally, you will want to have a prize to give to the volunteer. If you want to be a little deceptive, then set out a cup from a different fast food place. Have fun!

Back to School Blues
In mid September we had a “Back To School Blues” scavenger hunt. I enlisted 3-4 adult drivers and compiled a list of “blue” things. Ex: a blue crayon, a blue shoe, a blue tissue, etc.. The kids had 1/2 hour to find as many things on the list as possible. When they returned to the church we had a pizza party. The youth and the drivers had a blast!!!

A Letter From Camp
Dear Mom,
Our scoutmaster told us all to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and worried. We are OK. Only 1 of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened.

Puppet Ministry Ideas & Outline
If you are going to have a puppet ministry, everyone needs a place to get started. It is one thing to have the idea, it is entirely another to take the idea and put substance to it. The following are some suggestions taken from a booklet supplied b y The Master's Puppets from Cedarville University and from my own thoughts. Enjoy.
Analyze the ministry you are about to begin.
- Where and to whom will we minister?
- What age group will we minister to?
- How large are the groups we will minister to?
- What are the needs of our audience?
- What age group will we use to minister?
- What are their needs?
- How many will we need on our team?
Apply your Analysis.
- Outline the specific need of your audience
- Outline the specific need of your team.
Focus on your Outline.
- How do we meet learner needs?
- What are our goals/objectives?
Plan Your Program.
- How do we program/teach to meet learner needs?
- What will we do for a program?
Budget.
- What will this cost?
- Is the cost worth the outcome?
Who Will Be on Our Team?
- How will we recruit them?
- Who will be in charge?
Where Will We Get Our Puppets and Products?
- Will we buy them?
- Will we make them?
- Will we record our own tapes?
- Will we make our own productions?
Practice.
If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.

Puppet Stage Instructions
An actual picture of this stage in use.
This puppet stage is designed primarily for handheld puppets. It is an awesome looking, lightweight portable stage and is tried and true. This stage is designed and used by The Master's Puppets from Cedarville, University, Cedarville, Ohio. They have two teams who travel each year, and use this very stage design. Download the .pdf file below and enjoy reaching children with puppets using your very own puppet stage.
